John Murray Forbes, a prominent American businessman, is his name. He was born in Bordeaux on 23 February 1813 and died in Boston on 12 October 1898. He was a railroad magnate and president of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and Michigan Central Railroad in 1850s.

Francis Blackwell Forbes was the son of John Murray Forbes, a clergyman and a member of the Forbes family. He was the great grandson of Rev. John Forbes, grandson of James Grant Forbes. In addition, he was a pioneer in the field of Chinese botany and was responsible for promoting the Shanghai Country Club. He also wrote papers on Burlingame. Forbes' family moved to Europe in 1880s. Forbes joined Russell & Co. Forbes also started the Shanghai Steam Navigation Company, which operated flat-bottomed steamers along the Yangtze River.
Forbes was born in New York City 11 August 1839. His parents were John Murray Forbes (c1807-1885) and Anne Howell (c1849-1860). On 8 May 1867, he married Isabel Clark in New York City. They had three sons: William Howell Forbes (1837-1896), Henry De Courcy Forbes (1849-1920), & Paul Revere Forbes (1860-1936). The family owned and managed a variety of businesses in New York, as well as overseas.

Robert Bennet Forbes was an ocean captain and merchant of China trade. He was born in Massachusetts, near Boston on 18th September 1804. He received his primary education in France but returned to Boston for secondary school. He was active in shipbuilding and the opium trade. During his life, he was very generous, contributing time and money to charitable endeavors.

Forbes' papers include six boxes filled with loose papers, a bound notebook, and an extra-large folder. They include research materials and cover the years from 1817-1889. These papers contain correspondences and business records as well newspaper clippings and other documents that are related to his life.
